Developing a competent health education and health promotion workforce depends on opportunities for students to experience the utility of research and practice skills and competencies needed when entering the workforce. Authentic research allows students to take an active role in learning and supports acquiring knowledge and developing professional identity and skills. Using a team-based approach, undergraduate public health promotion students enrolled in a program planning course researched a health issue affecting students at a New England college. Students learned first-hand how to research, identify, analyze, and prioritize population health needs. Data collected from student-led focus groups and health needs assessment surveys were analyzed, and recommendations were communicated at a college-wide research poster symposium. The technology selected for this work promoted teamwork, learning, and using technologies as a health promotion resource. Students practiced professional skills and built proficiency linked with two of the eight areas of responsibility for health education specialists. They communicated findings and recommendations to the college administration during the poster sessions. Using the project results, students planned to implement an intervention during their practicum, the next course in their program. As demands for flexible and student-centered learning, both online and face-to-face, increase, designing courses and projects that transform experiential learning by linking it with professional skills can impact learning in meaningful ways Description based on XML content |
