According to self-determination theory, there are three basic psychological needs: autonomy, competence, and relationships. When these needs are satisfied in an activity, autonomous motivation occurs. Feedback from others is essential for the satisfaction of the basic psychological needs. Therefore, interpersonal relations can affect motivation. In a first step of the research project presented in this case, I hypothesized that autonomous motivation was higher among people having customer-focused jobs in comparison with people having non-customer-focused jobs. In a second step, I conducted a phenomenological study. I collected data by interviewing employees in Swedish municipalities. The results showed that employees experiencing frequent communication with co-workers also experienced a high quality in their family-life. Frequent communication with co-workers facilitated their work and saved emotional resources for their family-life Description based on XML content |
