It is an optimal methodology to summarize the state of knowledge in a particular topic and can often uncover novel conclusions as well as hedge controversies found in established bodies of literature. Although most meta-analyses can still be found in medicine and science, the recognition of this technique as a useful tool for the social sciences is growing rapidly.
