A summative scale combines responses from a larger number of survey questions to create a quantitative measure of an abstract construct as a new variable. Once created, the new scale variable can be used in further analysis, for instance to make comparisons between groups. This example introduces readers to the ideas behind summative scales and why we would want to use them. It shows how to create a scale from a set of survey variables and how to assess its reliability using a standard measure, known as Cronbach's Alpha. An illustration of the method is presented using data from the 2007-2008 British Crime Survey. Specifically, we construct a scale to measure confidence in the police Specialized Description based on online resource; title from home page (viewed on May 19, 2015) |
