| 一般注記 | Includes bibliographical references and index License restrictions may limit access This research case consists of two parts and is based on the experiences of a research project which sought to present empirical evidence of how the smart specialization strategy is implemented throughout the different regions in Europe. During the research project, it turned out that intraregional disparities were decisive for assessing the regional development of the case study region, and the development of a suitable research design was needed. A two-step mixed-method approach was chosen consisting of a classical combination of a quantitative and qualitative methods. A cluster analysis was carried out in order to group certain regional subunits with similar characteristics. In addition to that, personal in-depth interviews delivered detailed results as regards the implementation practices of the smart specialization concept in the different types of regional subunits in the federal state of Baden-Wuerttemberg.The first part of this case (this one) addresses the choice of research methods based on the theoretical foundations and explains the rationales for the selection of a research guiding reference frame.
